The Camden County Technical School Performing Arts Academy in Sicklerville decided to transform their 4,800 square foot carpentry shop into a Black Box Theatre.

Sicklerville, NJ

A black box theater, a concept which started in the 1960s, provides flexible staging techniques and allows the entire space to be adapted to the artistic elements of a production. The black box space provides the academy a versatile environment for their acting, voice & diction, movement, and musical theatre history, as well as for students’ professional and career development.

CCTS chose DFX to help design and implement the sound, lighting, and video systems in the theater. DFX incorporated some of the school’s existing sound equipment, such as powered speakers, wireless microphones, and a 24-channel mixing console, in order to keep the budget in line. These items were supplemented with digital processing, multiple input locations, and wireless intercom.

Through the use of LED technology (specifically Elation ELED Fresnels and LED Par Zooms), DFX was able to provide CCTS with a low energy and maintenance-free lighting solution. The lighting is controlled by the user-friendly Martin Light Jockey, a PC-based system through which students can manipulate the output.

The video system consists of a 6000 lumen projector and a 240″ diagonal projection screen. In addition to the impressive projection screen, another unique part of this Black Box Theatre is the use of black drape throughout the entire room. In addition to “blacking out” the room, the fabric acts as sound dampening material as well by absorbing echoes and reverberation, leading to a much more enjoyable listening experience. DFX also installed a 15’H x 25’W sharkstooth scrim to project onto for lighting and video effects.

Since CCTS is a technical school, their carpentry students assisted with the steel stud framing, drywall, moldings, setting floor tile and painting. Upon their completion in February 2011, DFX began the A/V installation process and completed it in a matter of just 2 weeks.

I have never been steered wrong by DFX. Everyone I have dealt with has been up front and honest with what I’ve needed and what they could provide. Their staff is their greatest strength: extremely helpful, friendly, and quick to help out. No other company I have dealt with has a staff as friendly and approachable as DFX. They are always willing to stop and assist with no notice. Every team member works in an expeditious manner — they make us feel special. They have taken the time to develop a relationship with us at our school.

In order to enhance Haddonfield United Methodist Church's contemporary church services, which incorporate music and video, DFX installed a high-end sound system designed for live performances.

Haddonfield, NJ

A wireless Crestron touch panel controls all aspects of the A/V system as well as other fixtures, such as the window shades. A rolling console desk allows our clients to keep it out of sight when it is not in use, and the multi-pin connector makes for simple plug and play.

The high-quality audio and video system ties into the rest of the building and into the main sanctuary. If the main sanctuary attendance overflows into Fellowship Hall, cameras in the main sanctuary are set to provide live video and audio feed into Fellowship Hall.

DFX installed a series of fully automated multimedia classrooms for William Patterson University.

Wayne, NJ

The project involved seven classrooms and one larger presentation hall. In each classroom we installed a podium equipped with a touch panel for instructors to control the projector and screen, as well as an input panel for laptop use.

The multimedia setup is fully controlled through a Crestron touch panel. Our programmers also created a customized graphic user interface (GUI) to match the William Paterson University’s logo and school colors. Our work was quick, clean, and thorough.

DFX absolutely exceeded our expectations. They have an excellent sales and technical staff, who provide prompt, reliable information and assistance. Great help, great work, great price. We couldn’t have asked for more!

DFX installed 40 multimedia classrooms throughout 5 different schools in the Moorestown school district.

Moorestown, NJ

We equipped these classrooms with projectors, speakers, and document cameras. Similar to our work in the Pinelands School District, the system supports plug & play and laptop input, making it easy for instructors and students to use.

Although the classrooms were in 5 separate locations, they still had to be streamlined. DFX installed the same system in five very different circumstances at each location. We were also responsible for providing electrical services, so we set up outlets in the ceilings for projectors as well as outlets around each classroom for the speakers.

DFX completed the work in just two weeks, even though school was in session and our technicians had to work second shift. The Moorestown School District was so happy with our work that they hired us to complete similar installations in another 30 classrooms in early 2011.

DFX absolutely exceeded our expectations. They have an excellent sales and technical staff, who provide prompt, reliable information and assistance. Great help, great work, great price. We couldn’t have asked for more!

Skylands reached out to DFX because they wanted to increase revenue by adding a "Wow Factor" to the 120,000 square foot ice rink.

Specifically, our customers were looking to add lighting effects and improve sound quality to enhance their weekly Ice Jam events, as well as the local hockey Championship league games hosted at the rink. The challenge here was specifying gear that could withstand the extreme environment of such a large ice rink.

DFX wanted to incorporate as much as the existing equipment as possible in order to keep the cost of the project down. The facility was outfitted with high quality EAW MK5199e speakers; however, their drivers were blown, they were underpowered, and the placement was incorrect. We replaced and weather-treated the drivers, relocated the speakers with custom metal array brackets, and increased the amplification with QSC amplifiers. In addition to those updates, we repaired existing gear that needed service. We also added JBL ASB4128 subwoofers to increase the bass output which helps contribute to the “night club” mood they were striving for. We used Community Veris 8T’s to provide the audio to spectator seating areas. The entire audio system is processed with a BSS Soundweb London Blu processor, with several Blu-8 remotes placed throughout the facility for zone, volume, and source selection. There are separate zones for each of the two rinks, the upstairs cafe, the bleachers, and the lobby.

For lighting, we choose Elation Design Spot 575B fixtures, which provide the automated effects that our customers were looking for. They also provide the ability to add up to 7 custom gobos, which are used to display local hockey team logos during games. The fixtures are controlled by a user friendly AR-32RM DMX controller. A Look Unique 2 haze machine is used for haze effects.

We couldn’t be happier with the outcome of this installation. The owners were great to work with and they are thrilled with the new system as well. Not only did we deliver the “Wow Factor” as promised, but so far, they have seen a huge increase in revenue. Young customers have taken to Facebook to post about the exciting new facility and how it is the place to be on Friday nights!

In addition to providing Skylands with an amazing sound and automated lighting system, every six months we perform preventative maintenance visits under a service contract. These visits allow us to keep an eye on the equipment so that we can address any issues before they lead to system failure, which is not an option on Friday nights!
